Giving back
10% of our profits go to the Shirley Walters Foundation.
S.E.T. Sustainable Energy Technology in Jamaica is committed to giving 10% of our profits to the Shirley Walters Foundation, a Jamaican foundation that helps students from struggling families pay for their education.
Why this matters to us
We started S.E.T. to help Jamaican families keep the lights on: power that works on our grid, at a fair price, with honest advice. Keeping a fridge cold or a fan running through an outage matters. A child's education matters even more.
Every time you buy through one of our recommendations, part of what we earn goes back into Jamaica's young people. You pay nothing extra.
About the Foundation
Shirley Walters was a teacher, school principal, Sunday-school teacher, music teacher, choir master and ordained minister, and a mentor to countless people. Her life was guided by Proverbs 19:17: "He that gives to the poor lends to the Lord."
In 2015, troubled by a rise in crime against children, she began weekly prayer meetings in her home with four colleagues. Out of those meetings came a simple container labelled "For Needy Students." Each week, members and visitors put in what they could, and at the start of every school year the money went to the parents of students who needed help with school costs.
In 2019, at her memorial service, Ainsley Dixon, one of the many people her generosity helped, called for a scholarship foundation in her honour and made its first donation. The Shirley Walters Foundation grew from there.
Today the Foundation:
- Gives scholarships to students pursuing secondary and tertiary education.
- Helps families in emergencies. After Hurricane Melissa, it gathered care packages and essential supplies for affected households.
- Helped bridge the digital divide. During COVID-19, it provided tablets so children could keep up with online classes.
Our commitment
- 10% of our profits. Profit is what S.E.T. Jamaica keeps after the costs of running the business.
- No extra cost to you. Our giving comes from our own earnings, never from a surcharge on your order.
- Straight answers. If you have a question about our giving, ask us on WhatsApp or by email. We're glad to talk about it.
The Shirley Walters Foundation is an independent organisation. It does not review or endorse the products we recommend.
