E-bikes
E-bike vs route taxi: what your commute really costs
Short answer: a 10 km route-taxi commute each way costs about J$9,700 a month at today's fares (about J$16,700 if you take two taxis each way). Charging an e-bike for the same trips from JPS costs roughly J$350–530 a month, or nothing from a solar panel. A Mooncool POP lands in Jamaica for roughly J$240K–270K, so it can pay for itself in about 15–29 months, before any registration or insurance costs. Check the road rules first: helmets are required by law.
A month of commuting (10 km each way, 22 workdays)
| How you travel | About per month |
|---|---|
| Route taxi, one taxi each way (about J$220 a trip) | J$9,700 |
| Route taxi, two taxis each way | J$16,700 |
| Small car, petrol only | J$6,300, plus insurance, licence, parking and repairs |
| E-bike charged from JPS | J$350–530 |
| E-bike charged from solar | J$0 in cash |
Taxi fares from the official formula in effect from 1 July 2026 (base fare plus a per-km charge); your route's fare may differ. Petrol at about J$220 a litre at the pump (Petrojam ex-refinery price J$206.31 for 87-octane on 15 October 2026, up about 37% since January). JPS power at about J$50 per kWh. E-bike use 14–20 Wh per km on Jamaican hills.
Cost per 100 km
- Route taxi: about J$2,200
- Small car (petrol): about J$1,430
- 125 cc motorbike (petrol): about J$550
- E-bike on JPS power: about J$80–120
- E-bike on solar: J$0 in cash
How long until it pays for itself?
The Mooncool POP folding e-bike is US$1,199.99 on Mooncool's US store (checked 18 October 2026). With freight and customs, expect roughly US$1,500–1,700 (≈ J$240K–270K) delivered: Jamaica Customs charges 10% duty on electric motorcycles, and GCT is zero-rated. Against one taxi each way, it pays back in about 26–29 months; against two taxis each way, about 15–17 months. Registration, insurance or a helmet would add to the cost.
Mooncool confirmed in writing that its chargers are rated 110–240V, 50/60Hz, so they work on JPS power. See the e-bikes and trikes.
Charge it from the sun
- A full EcoFlow DELTA 2 Max charges a POP about 2.3 times. A BLUETTI AC180 charges it about 1.3 times.
- One 200 W solar panel puts back about 750–900 Wh into the power station on a clear day, enough for a 20 km round trip with room for phones and a fan.
- Best routine: charge the power station from the sun by day, and the e-bike from the power station at night.
- Cloudy days can cut solar by 30–70%, so keep JPS as a backup.
Check the road rules first
- Helmets are required by law on any motorcycle or bicycle (Road Traffic Act 2018, section 74).
- The Road Traffic Act has no separate e-bike category. It defines a motorcycle as a motor vehicle with fewer than four wheels, and Jamaica Customs classes e-bikes as electric motorcycles, so a throttle e-bike may need registration, a licence and insurance.
- Ask the Island Traffic Authority what applies to your e-bike before you ride on the road.

Questions
How much does it cost to charge an e-bike in Jamaica?
About J$80 to J$120 per 100 km from JPS power, at roughly J$50 per kWh. A typical 20 km daily commute costs about J$350 to J$530 a month, or nothing if you charge from a solar panel.
Is an e-bike cheaper than a route taxi?
Over time, usually. A 10 km commute each way costs about J$9,700 a month by route taxi. A Mooncool POP delivered to Jamaica costs roughly J$240,000 to J$270,000, so it pays for itself in about 15 to 29 months, depending on your route.
Do I need a licence for an e-bike in Jamaica?
Possibly. The Road Traffic Act 2018 has no separate e-bike category and defines a motorcycle as a motor vehicle with fewer than four wheels. Helmets are required by law. Ask the Island Traffic Authority what applies to your e-bike.
Can I charge an e-bike from a solar generator?
Yes. A full EcoFlow DELTA 2 Max charges a Mooncool POP about 2.3 times, and one 200 W panel can top the power station up each sunny day.
Will a US e-bike charger work on JPS power?
Check the label. Mooncool confirmed its chargers are rated 110 to 240V, 50/60Hz, which suits Jamaica's 110V, 50Hz power.
